Before you can start driver training in Ontario, Canada, you need to obtain a G1 licence, which is the first level of the graduated licensing system. Here are the steps you need to follow:

Step 1: Study for the Test
You should prepare for the written knowledge test by studying the Ontario Driver's Handbook. This handbook covers the rules of the road, traffic signs, and safe driving practices.

Step 2: Meet Eligibility Requirements
Ensure you meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You need to provide valid identification that shows your legal name, date of birth, and signature. Examples of accepted documents include a passport, Canadian citizenship card, or Permanent Resident card.

Step 3: Take a Vision Test
When you apply for your G1 licence, you will need to pass a vision test. This ensures you can see well enough to drive safely.

Step 4: Pass the Knowledge Test
The knowledge test is a written exam that consists of multiple-choice questions about the rules of the road and traffic signs. The test is available in multiple languages.

Step 5: Pay the Fee
You will need to pay a fee to take the knowledge test and obtain your G1 licence. The fee for the G1 package, which includes the knowledge test, Class G2 road test, and a five-year licence, is approximately CAD 158.25.

Step 6: Get Your G1 Licence
If you pass the knowledge test and meet all other requirements, you will receive your G1 licence. As a G1 driver, you will need to adhere to certain restrictions, such as:
  • You must maintain a zero blood alcohol level.
  • You cannot drive alone; you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience.
  • You cannot drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways.
  • You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

Step 7: Enroll in Driver Training
Once you have your G1 licence, you can enroll in an accredited driving school for driver training. This training will include both in-class and in-car lessons to help you become a safe and competent driver.

By following these steps, you will be well-prepared to begin your driver training in Ontario, Canada.

In-car lessons will begin within a few weeks after finishing the online course or attending the classroom.

An instructor will contact you to schedule your in-car lessons.

You can be picked up for your in-car lessons in one of the following locations:

  • Owen Sound
  • Collingwood
  • Meaford
  • Thornbury
  • Walkerton, or
  • Hanover

The instructor will confirm the pick-up location with you. You will be dropped off at the same location as pick-up.

Ontario has a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) that includes three stages: G1, G2, and a full G licence.

The GLS is designed to help new drivers gain experience gradually and ensure they become safe and responsible drivers.

To apply for a G1 licence, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision test, and pass a written knowledge test on the rules of the road and traffic signs. You also need to provide valid identification and pay the required fee.

In the Grey / Bruce area you can visit a DriveTest or ServiceOntario facility to apply:

G1 drivers must:
  • Maintain a zero blood alcohol level.
  • Be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience.
  • Not drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways.
  • Not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

8 or 12 months after receiving the G1
If you have taken our approved driver education program, you can take the G2 test after 8 months. Otherwise you will have to wait 12 months.

Our course includes:
  • At least 20 hours of classroom or online instruction.
  • 10 hours of in-car training.

You can retake it.
If you fail the knowledge test, you can retake it but you will be required to pay a fee again.

You can retake it.
If you fail the G2 or G road test, you must wait at least 10 days before retaking it. However, you will have to pay the fee again.

For the G2 or G road test, bring:
  • Your current driver's licence.
  • A properly insured and registered vehicle.
  • The test fee, if it has not been prepaid.

To prepare for the road tests:
  • Take professional driving lessons.
  • Practice driving in various conditions and on different types of roads.
  • Review the Ontario Driver’s Handbook.
  • Ensure you understand and can perform all required maneuvers, such as parallel parking, three-point turns, and lane changes.

Driving outside Ontario with a G1 licence is generally not allowed due to the restrictions.
With a G2 licence, you can drive in other provinces and territories, but you should check the specific regulations of each jurisdiction.
